Switzerland and Peru Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Promote Responsible Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining

Switzerland and Peru have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the development of a more responsible, inclusive, and sustainable Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector.

The agreement, signed by Swiss Ambassador Paul Garnier and Peru’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Waldir Ayasta Mechán, seeks to advance the formalization of mining activities, enhance gold traceability, and improve access to international markets that value responsibly sourced gold.

Under the MoU, Switzerland will share its expertise and technical know-how to support the modernization of the sector, promoting greater efficiency, transparency, and alignment with internationally recognized environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

The Memorandum also reinforces a strategic partnership dedicated to strengthening the entire gold value chain by encouraging the adoption of responsible mining practices and contributing to the sustainable development of Peru’s mining industry.

This initiative marks an important milestone in Swiss–Peruvian cooperation and reflects a shared commitment to fostering a competitive, transparent, and sustainable gold sector that benefits local communities, industry stakeholders, and international markets.
